Teaching Philosophy

My teaching philosophy is rooted in the belief that all students are capable learners who bring unique strengths, perspectives, experiences, and ways of engaging with knowledge. I view disability as an essential part of human diversity and believe inclusive education requires intentional design, flexibility, and a commitment to removing barriers to learning. Rather than expecting students to adapt to a single model of learning, I strive to create instructional environments that recognize learner variability and provide meaningful opportunities for every student to participate and succeed.

My approach to teaching is guided by a three-tiered differentiated-instruction model: Foundational, Proficient, and Exceptional. This model reflects my commitment to supporting students at varying levels of readiness while maintaining high expectations and promoting growth.

Tier 1: Foundational — Building Access and Belonging

At the foundational level, my focus is creating an inclusive learning environment where all students have access to the essential knowledge, skills, and resources needed to engage with course content. I prioritize clear expectations, accessible materials, multiple methods of engagement, and structured learning opportunities. By incorporating principles of universal design for learning (UDL), I aim to anticipate diverse learning needs from the beginning and establish a classroom culture where students feel valued, respected, and supported.

Tier 2: Proficient — Developing Skills Through Differentiation

At the proficient level, I provide targeted instructional strategies that help students strengthen their understanding and apply their learning in meaningful ways. I use formative assessment, student feedback, and flexible approaches to identify where additional support or enrichment may be beneficial. Differentiation at this level may include scaffolding, varied instructional methods, additional practice opportunities, or alternative pathways for demonstrating mastery. My goal is to help students build confidence, independence, and ownership of their learning.

Tier 3: Exceptional — Fostering Growth, Leadership, and Innovation

At the exceptional level, students are encouraged to extend their learning beyond competency toward deeper engagement, creativity, and leadership. I provide opportunities for students to apply knowledge in complex ways, explore individual interests, collaborate with others, and contribute meaningfully to the learning community. This level emphasizes student agency and recognizes that excellence can take many forms depending on each learner’s strengths and goals.

Ultimately, my role as an educator is to create a classroom where students are not defined by limitations, but empowered by opportunities. Through inclusive practices, differentiated instruction, and a commitment to accessibility, I strive to build learning environments where every student can experience belonging, develop their abilities, and achieve meaningful success.
